Somerfield residents support Basket Brigade charity initiative this Christmas

Somerfield’s Social Club in Keysborough is hosting a toy gift drive and fundraiser to support the Melbourne Basket Brigade this Christmas, with the hope of making a difference to hundreds of disadvantaged families across Victoria.

Run by volunteers, the Basket Brigade raise much needed funds and toys for the needy, helping put Christmas food hampers together to ensure families don’t go without during the festive season.

Intrapac’s Senior Development Manager Max Shifman said it was the first time that Somerfield was supporting the Basket Brigade and believed it was a great way of giving back to the community.

“As part of our call to action we encourage parents and children living at Somerfield to buy a small gift for a child in need, or make a monetary donation online for a food hamper. As little as fifty dollars buys one family a food hamper. Every little bit helps make a big difference,” he said.

“Starting from 22 November until 12 December we will have a Christmas tree on display at our new sales office off Olive Tree Drive at Somerfield for residents to place their presents,” said Max.

Gift tags will be hung on the tree indicating the profile of a child in need of a gift, so residents know what kind of gift to buy. There is an immediate need for gifts for children aged four years and older.

“Once purchased, residents can return to the sales office with wrapped presents and place them under the tree. The aim is to buy gifts for at least 50 children in need this Christmas this year,” said Max.

The south – east area region is one of the largest catchment areas that Basket Brigade distributes food hampers to, having supported 100 families in this area last year. Their aim is to raise enough money for 250 food hampers this year.

Intrapac has made a $2,000 monetary donation, which will directly go towards buying food for Christmas hampers to feed those less fortunate during the festive season.
